Waterless weekend for Eastvale

Eastvale residents were without water for four days.

Complaints and concerns flooded in from Eastvale residents on Monday who have been without water since noon on Friday.

Resident Clinton Merber says that he logged a complaint with Ekurhuleni Metro who responded by saying that a pump had been damaged at the reservoir, but didn’t offer a timeline for when it will be repaired.

“The municipality has been working on fixing the pump at the reservoir since then,” ward councillor Ramesh Sheodin says.

“It was difficult to get another pump during the weekend,” he says.

Water tankers have been roaming the area to provide water.

According to Sheodin water was restored to residents at 2am on Tuesday after the motor of the first pump, which was installed late on Monday night, failed.

A second pump was installed which reinstated the water supply to Eastvale.

Merber says that he has only seen one water tanker while another resident, Priscilla Tshabalala, says that some water tankers couldn’t even reach their destinations.

“People have been seriously inconvenienced,” says Sheodin.

“We have had to use buckets to fetch water which is something we are not used to in the suburbs,” Tshabalala says.

She says that it has been an eye-opener living without the resource, especially during a water crisis.

Another resident, Marne van Rooyen, complained that it was impossible to get through to metro’s call centre and that she was cut off several times.

At the time of publishing, the Advertiser had not received comment from the metro.
