NG church shavathon fund-raiser for cancer

The NG church Springs North raised R5500 for the Cancer Association of South Africa with their shavathon fund-raiser last Saturday.

The Springs North NG Kerk hosted a shavathon and potjiekos competition in honour of cancer awareness month last Saturday, 15 October.

The youth group who organised the event, managed to raise R5500; which will be donated in full to the Cancer Association of South African (Cansa).

“Our youth is a caring group and they want to give back to others unashamedly,” said Maritza Wolmarans, youth leader and church council member.

Kicking off at 11am, five brave men had their heads shaved clean – while around 30 other people had their hair sprayed with non-permanent colour spray in support of the cause.

Three different potjies were entered into the competition, which everyone enjoyed together after the judging took place; while guest artist Henri Alant entertained the crowd with a performance.

Organisers decided to continue the event on Sunday and challenged members of the church who didn’t attend the previous day, to have their hair sprayed.

The youth group raised R3700 on Saturday and another R1800 on Sunday.

“This was our first shavathon that we organised, but we plan on doing it again next year; only way bigger,” Maritza added.

Youth leader Gertruida Veldman said other churches were invited to the event and that they’ll specifically invite other youth groups to join in next year.

“Together, we are better than completely alone,” she said.

Veldman said the youth group is on a new path with new leaders this year.

“On Mandela Day we took cupcakes and muffins to the N17 hospital; and plan on doing many more projects in the future,” Gertruida says.

Maritza invites all youth from pre-school age to matrics, to join the youth group every Friday evening.
