Fire in hut leads to Musa’s death

On Tuesday evening, a fire of unknown origin claimed the life of Musa Zikhele, as it raged through his wooden hut, burning it to the ground.

The 30-year-old caddie master at Springs Country Club screamed for help, as he apparently couldn’t get out of the hut.

According to Merlene Nel, executive board member of the club, the guard on duty at the club heard Musa’s screams at 9.45pm.

The wooden hut was situated between two outside buildings.

The guard raised the alarm and many people rushed to the scene to render assistance, but the fire had spread rapidly through the wooden hut and the intense heat prevented them from rescuing Musa.

A few other people tried to gain entrance to the structure by breaking down the brick wall from the inside of the building next to the hut, to get to Musa.

Merlene says she doesn’t know who contacted the Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Services (DEMS), but when they arrived on the scene they managed to extinguish the fire and rescue Musa.

“Unfortunately he was badly burned and, according to the paramedics, he suffered 70% burn wounds to his body,” she says.

He was rushed to the Far East Rand Hospital where he died at 3am on Wednesday.

It is uncertain how the fire started.

An inquest docket was opened at the Springs Police Station and the DEMS are investigating.

Musa had been working at the golf club for almost 20 years.

Merlene says he worked long hours, but was proud of his job and always willing to go the extra mile.

“He was always humble and we will miss him terribly,” she adds.
