No fast service for water leaks from the metro

The leaking fire hydrants reported by the Advertiser have not yet been fixed.

According to the Eastern Gauteng Chamber of Commerce and Industry manager Anita Greeff, they reported the leak to the Ekurhuleni Metro a few months ago.

It wasn’t long after the metro workers fixed the leak, which the metro claims was the fire hydrants which needed to be replaced, that the water started seeping through the cement on the sidewalk.

This leak, however, has also been reported to the metro by the Chamber.

Metro spokesman Themba Gadebe says it is a fire hydrant leak.

“We will be attending to it as we were not able to fix it due to the fact that it needs to be completely replaced,” he says.

He claims their biggest challenge is the huge concrete block which is holding the hydrant.

“We have dispatched it for repair and replacement through the water contractor,” says Gadebe.

Springs resident Kagiso Selema (22) says the water leak doesn’t complement the metro’s recent water reductions measures.

“If residents and businesses are reminded to use water sparingly, then why does it take the metro so long to fix a water leak?

Does the same rules not apply to the metro?” he asks.

He refers to Gadebe’s comment: “The metro has increased capacity to respond to complaints laid by the public.”

“This hydrant has been leaking for three weeks, therefore, I don’t know how long it takes the metro’s water contractor to receive this complaint to actually implement the repairs or replacement of the hydrant,” says Selema.

To report all water leaks, contact the metro’s call centre on 086 054 3000.
