Girls’ High cycle fun

On Saturday, Springs Girls' High School's (SGHS) annual mountain bike race drew more cyclists than in 2015.

This event, held at Nigel Bottling Industries, draws cyclists from all over Ekurhuleni.

The race started at 8am.

Event organiser Yolanda van Greunen says this year large groups of cyclists took on the 50km, 30km and 15km and a few social riders were cycling along.

“We are grateful to Lincoln Phakisi, a local businessman, who is our main sponsor of the day,” she says.

Quite a few children finished the 15km distance and the first u-12 girl to complete this race was Rachel Green (11) in 00:49:49.

She says it was a great ride and she loved every moment.

Ansie Never (46) and Marlene Harris (42) entered the 30km race, but decided to rather turn back and then completed the 15km distance.

“I enjoy cycling, but am coming down with the flu and that’s why I changed my mind,” says Ansie.

The results were as follows:

Mongezi Mgwenya (36) was the first man to cross the 30km finish line (01:15:41) with Calvin Hutton (42) shortly behind him (01:17:03).

Raymond van Deventer finished third (01:20:09).

The rest of the results were as follows:

The first woman to cross the 50km finish line was Tammy Whitby (02:38:33).

“It was a good win for Tammy who came third in the 66km race in 2015,” says Yolanda.

In second place was Anja de Roode (02:44:46) with Adele van Huyssteen in third place (03:25:00).

Edwill O’Neill was the first man to finish the 50km with a time of 1:44:51.

Cobus van den Berg was second (1:50:01) and Kyle Pietersen, third (1:56:29).

Lee-Marisa Williams crossed the 30km finish line first (01:27:07).

Anique Bekker was second (01:31.23) and Amy Green third (01:36:21).

Rachel won the 15km race with Benjamin Green in second place (00:54:04) and Jacqueline Erasmus third (00:57:07).

Yolanda says all the cyclists enjoyed the race.
