Sewage covers Platina Crescent

Anthony Pretorius (48) says that, for two years, his industrial park premises has been plagued with sewage leakage as a result of a broken pipe.

The leakage has covered the premise’s pavement and streams down the driveway and onto Platina Crescent, in New Era.

Anthony says the matter has been reported to the Ekurhuleni Metro numerous times and twice again in the past week alone.

“Last Thursday the matter was reported to the metro by one of the other business occupants of the premises,” he says.

“The owners of the premises reported it again on Monday.”

On Tuesday, following what he says was an overflow of sewage water from the toilets, from Monday afternoon, Anthony went to the metro offices to report the intensification of a two-year problem.

He adds that they are unable to use the toilets on the premises and are now faced with unsanitary and unhealthy working conditions.

“When I went to the metro offices this morning, their systems reported that the job at our site had been completed,” he adds, “I then called one of the officials of the sewage department who also confirmed what the metro systems had reflected.”

“I told him that the records of the system were inaccurate and that the situation has intensified from Monday afternoon.”

Anthony says the official assured him that metro workers would be sent to the site to fix the matter.

This does not impress Anthony, who says that, in December, they had a worse overflow of sewage and yet the metro failed to permanently get rid of the problem.

“In December we had human waste overflowing onto the pavement,” he adds.

“The metro came to open the blocked pipe so that the leakage can flow into the veld situated across the back of the premises.”

“This is not a permanent solution- they need to replace the entire pipeline.”

Anthony says the interim measure, to open the sewage pipe to flow into the veld, is not an effective solution by the metro.

“They have said that they will permanently fix the matter in September,” he adds.

“They said there is not enough money right now.”

“I don’t think that’s good enough, considering the fact that this has been a problem for two years.”

Questions have been sent to the metro.
