Warning: hijackings on the rise

Hijackings happening while motorists are sitting inside their vehicles are on the increase.

W/O David Mphali, police spokesman, says more than 15 hijacking cases have been reported since May.

He says the hijackers see a chance to work when the vehicles are parked, either in the street or next to the house.

Mphali continues to say most victims of such hijackings are sitting in their vehicles parked in the street, where they listen to music.

“The hijackers order the victims to get out of the vehicle, before they drive off in the car,” says Mphali.

He advises the drivers not to open their car windows when sitting in their vehicles and also to rather lock their doors.

“It is best to have a tracking device installed or an alarm as most of these hijacked vehicles don’t have security measures installed.

“We cannot combat crime alone and need the assistance of the community,” he says.

Mphali believes if the community gets involved with the sector crime forums, it will reduce the number of hijackings.
