Dress for the season of your life

They say it takes approximately 21 days to make or break a habit.

That means it takes approximately 21 days to change your life.

As we are approaching winter, we need to start preparing ourselves to brace the cold and take the necessary measures to ensure that we keep warm and that we do not fall sick easily.

There are certain habits that we need to adopt in order to survive what is predicted to be one of our coldest winters yet.

It works the same way with the different seasons of our lives: in order to survive the next level or season of our lives, we need to adapt our habits to match the environment we find ourselves in.

The same thought patterns, habits and behaviours we had when we were children cannot possibly be the yardstick for which we lead or lives and conduct ourselves, whether it is personally or professionally.

My father once said to me, “When you are 10 years old, we can understand and dismiss certain mistakes you make because they are in correlation to your age at the time, but when you are 18 years old and making the mistakes of a ten year old, we can no longer excuse them.”

Simply put, it is important to understand the place you are at in your life and identify how you need to reposition yourself to maximise your potential and take the correct decisions for whichever season you may find yourself in.

The same habits you had as a teenager cannot be the same habits you adopt as an adult, likewise with each progression you make in life.

It is no cliché when they say that you only live once and time wasted is time you will never get back.

This is because there are certain opportunities, lessons for growth, and moments that you will miss if you do not consciously apply yourself to where you presently are.

In winter, it is impractical to wear a pair of shorts and a T-shirt, when temperatures outside are close to sub-zero.

In summer, it is impractical to dress like an Eskimo, when the temperatures outside are as warm as the centre of the earth.

These are a few very simple illustrations to highlight how important knowing where you are and what is required of you is, in order to make correct and informed decisions.

Life is a constant journey of introspection and knowing which habits to die to, in order to get to (or adapt to) the next level of your life and to be honest, at some point, certain habits, thoughts and behaviours no longer fit the description of who you currently are or where you plan on going.

It is a matter of “form meets function”, where what is required of you is what you need to work on becoming in order to be successful, fulfilled and equipped to handle whatever may be thrown at you.

In the words of anonymous, “Take a cue from nature: the moon cycles and follows specific patterns. Following small habitual patterns will make you more functional.”
