Illegal mining equipment worth R23 000 confiscated

Members from the EMPD Equestrian Unit and the Springs Police confiscated illegal mining equipment worth R23 000 in Gugulethu Informal Settlement.

This joint operation and search of illegal miners, took place on Tuesday, (May 24), where law enforcement seized various items of equipment used by illegal miners.

Wilfrd Kgasago, EMPD spokesman, says when the officers approached a shack, suspected to be used as a place where the process of sieving mud from the gold takes place.

“The suspects left behind equipment estimated to be worth R23 000,” he says.

The equipment confiscated included water pumps, gas bottles, wheelbarrows, spades, liquefying pots and buckets, which were confiscated and taken to the police station.

Capt Johannes Ramphora, Springs police spokesman, confirms the equipment was booked in at the police station.
