Striders athletes prepare for Comrades

There are 34 athletes from Springs Striders who will represent the club at the Comrades Marathon on May 30.

The 14 women and 20 men include Alta van der Walt, Karl Herwig and Gerrie Du Toit, the club’s three novices. Carla Bruinette, Eunese Beukes, Monique Beukes and Wayne Kavirayain will run for their Back to Back medal.

Rhoda Steyn, club secretary, says this means the four athletes had to have completed their first Comrades last year, finished the marathon before the cut-off time and must also finish this year’s marathon before the cut-off time.

“They will receive an extra medal called the Back to Back medal,” says Rhoda.

It will be Werner Buys’ 10th Comrades and he will run to receive his permanent green number.

Veteran athlete Petra Myburgh will be running her 20th Comrades and will receive her double permanent green number once she completes the marathon.

The club is proud to have Willie Du Preez and Graham Handley, who will be running their 26th Comrades.

Athletes will compete in their last race prior to the Comrades on Sunday (May 22) at the Springs Rugby Club.

It is only a 10km and 15km race which will take place at the Springs Rugby Club starting at 7am.

“The club’s Presidents Run is held annually to wish our athletes good luck for the Comrades,” says Rhoda.
