Thieves steal popular vehicle trailer

New Era businessman and owner of a stolen trailer, Ivan van der Schyff (59), is offering a reward for its return.

The 4m dual axle vehicle carrier, valued at approximately R40 000, was stolen at 6.30am on Saturday (April 30), at his business in Bell Street, New Era.

Van der Schyff says although the trailer wasn’t secured by a lock and chain, the gate was where the suspects gained entry to his premises.

“The pieces of the cut padlock and the damaged chain were found at the scene,” he explains.

He reported the incident to the police who eventually came out on Tuesday, to take his statement.

In the meantime van der Schyff secured the other trailers on the premises with locks and chains, to prevent further losses.

“What made the stolen trailer special is that its main purpose is to carry vehicles and it was used all over Gauteng,” he says.

He has been running his business from these premises for 13 years, but has stopped manufacturing trailers, due to the increase in crime in the area.

“It’s not worth buying material, due to the continuous crimes, in which the steel is being stolen,” says van der Schyff.

Springs police spokesman Capt Johannes Ramphora confirms that a case of business robbery was opened and says the case has been transferred to the Benoni Vehicle Theft Unit for further investigation.

Van der Schyff is offering a reward for the return of his trailer – undamaged.

Anyone with information is asked to call him on 084 607 6873 or 072 128 7582.
