The EMPD K9 Unit arrested a 32-year-old man at his house in Fourth Avenue, Vischkuil, at 10am on Monday, after approximately 25 dagga trees, of about 1.5m tall, were found in his garden.

Several tins and glass bottles, filled with dagga, were found in a room inside the house and in a cupboard.

The arrest came after Barries Barnard from Hi5 Kids Recovery Unit, received information from a reliable source about the cultivation and manufacturing of dagga on this property.

Barnard immediately contacted the EMPD K9 Unit who accompanied him to the premises.

“We also discovered a hydroponic laboratory inside the house as well as cannabis oil,” he says.

The EMPD found boxes of vegetables and dagga in the man’s vehicle which he intended to sell.

Springs police spokesman Amanda Greybe says they were called to the scene to make the arrest.

“The man’s three dogs will be taken care of by his neighbour,” says Greybe.

Wilfred Kgasago, EMPD spokesman, says after the officers searched the house, they discovered more tins of dagga on the ceiling.

In a storeroom on the premises the officers also found dagga, hung on a wire to dry out.

The lounge, an empty room and the passage of the house were used for the manufacturing of the dagga.

“The plot comprises of a complete system that commences with seeding to a complete and
packed product. Dagga is cultivated on thirty 6m² mini fields. Processing of the raw material in done both outside and inside the house where it is cut, ground, dried, weighed and packed ready for a market,” he says.

A 240l dustbin, filled with dried out dagga, as well as tools used for the manufacturing thereof, were also found in an empty room.

Kgasago says that the dagga found has an estimated value of R500 000.

The man will appear in court soon.
