New year 5117 celebrations

The Tamil and Telugu New Year celebrations were held at the Bakerton Community Centre on Saturday.

Old and young enjoyed the dance medleys and the invoking dance items performed by Shivohum Fine Arts.

Secretary of the Bhairavi Sungum, Loshini Govender, says the Shivohum promotes the Indian cultural heritage of arts.

The event was traditionally opened in prayer by learners from the Bhairavi Sungum Tamil School and led by Saranam Naicker.

The ceremonial lighting of the universal lamp is a symbol which is part of every Bhairavi event.

Siga Govender, the vice-chairman of the Bhairavi Sungum welcomed everyone to the event.

“There is a difference in greeting someone to make them feel welcome and at home and by symbolically shaking every guests’ hand is my way of making everyone feel at home,” says Siga.

Chairman of the Bhairavi Sungum, Kesavan Pillay, put the emphasis on parenting and what it means for the younger generation.

“The importance of parenting is to teach our children respect and discipline so that they can look at us with respect,” he says.

His son Tharun Kesavan Pillay (6) performed an act about what his father taught him about give and take, much to the enjoyment of all the guests.

More entertainment in the form of semi classical and devotional music was performed by the Katcheri Group.

All the guests were treated to a scrumptious meal and cold drink after the proceedings.

The guests were unanimous that the year 5117 celebrations were something to remember.
