Most men, women and children know the story of Peter Pan, the flying boy from Neverland whose archenemy is the notorious Captain Hook.

Pan is the prequel to the Peter Pan legend, telling the story of how Peter Pan came to be.

The story kicks off in a bleak orphanage in London, in the midst of World War Two, where Peter, a rebellious, 12-year-old boy, played by Levi Miller, has lived his whole life.

One night, Peter and his fellow orphans are taken from the orphanage and whisked away to Neverland where he is forced to mine pixie dust for the cruel and ruthless pirate, Blackbeard, played by Hugh Jackman.

Peter finds great adventure when he escapes with his new friend James Hook (Garrett Hedlund) as he searches for his mother, who he believes is in Neverland.

He discovers his true destiny as he fights to defend Neverland, defeat Blackbeard and overcome his fear of heights.

The movie has incredible special effects, but lacks the magical feeling that one associates with Peter Pan.

Children may find Pan slightly boring, as excitement starts only about 30 minutes into the movie.

Jackman and Miller are the stars of the show and Jackman took me by surprise with his portrayal of Blackbeard, a role that is a complete contradiction to his many others.

Pan definitely has potential to be a good family movie, but one that requires concentration and endurance.
