Springs bowler excels

John Molupe (28) was selected for the u-35 bowls B team who will compete in a tournament in Port Elizabeth.

He will be flying down to Port Elizabeth on April 2 and stay in a hotel until his departure on April 9.

Starting to work as a greenkeeper at the Springs Town Bowling Club at the age of 22, he watched people playing bowls and soon developed an interest in the game.

It wasn’t long before John started competing and was soon chosen by Ekurhuleni Bowls to play in the EGB u-25 squad.

He came sixth in this tournament but was determined to do better.

Soon his dreams came true and he won the Ekurhuleni Gauteng Bowls u-35 Champion of Champions twice.

“I never thought I would win any competition,” he says.

He believes his dream to become an SA bowler is soon to be fulfilled.

Mike Smith, John’s coach, says John attended the transformation camp, put together by Bowls SA, and came second. “He is pretty well profiled and easy to work with,” says Mike.

John has always done well at tournaments and is eager to be the best.

Mike says from a coaching perspective he finds John will listen to him but will then debate about what Mike teaches him.

He claims there is a definite improvement in John’s bowling and game play.

“The next objective will be to play in the A side and who knows after that,” says Mike.

John is very excited to fly to Port Elizabeth and compete in the tournament.

There is always a first time for everything and this year it is John’s turn.
