BJJ fighters make Springs proud

Three members from the Rio Grappling Club in Springs recently competed in the South African National Pro Jiu Jitsu Championships in Cape Town.

Springs resident Michael van Heerden (30) won gold in his division, claiming the title of South African champion in the white belt division.

Cornell Serfontein (31) won a silver medal in the finals of the purple belt division when he lost to his opponent, who claimed gold.

Another Springs resident, Darren Allen (27), also participated in the championships and although he did not claim a title, the club is proud of him as it was his first national competition.

Their coach, Jurgen Putter, says he is extremely proud of his students and that they did very well.

“On top of these guys’ brilliant performance, Rio Grappling Club SA had gained the most medals and points at the championships, making Rio Grappling Club the best Brazilian Jiu Jitsu group in SA,” says professional EFC fighter Stefan Pretorius who is also part of the club.

Stefan explains that the Rio Grappling Club is an international club franchise and that there are a number of these clubs in SA.
