Murder accused remain in custody

The three suspects who were arrested after the murder of Maj Coert Jordaan (39) appeared in the Springs Magistrates Court on Tuesday.

Two of the accused appeared, together, before magistrate Cornel Pretorius, while the third’s case is being heard by magistrate Collen Mashego.

Both cases were postponed until next Wednesday, when all three men will make bail applications.

As per their requests during their first appearances on February 1, they were assigned legal aid lawyers on Monday who appeared with the suspects for the first time on Tuesday.

Capt Johannes Ramphora, Springs police spokesman, says the suspects’ lawyers have until Wednesday to prepare for their client’s bail applications.

The suspects before Pretorius stand accused of Jordaan’s murder, possession of unlicensed firearms, robbery with aggravated circumstances and possession of a stolen vehicle.

These offences fall under Schedule Six of the Criminal Procedure Act.

This act stipulates that the onus is on the accused and their defence to prove that their case is exceptional and that bail should be granted.

The third suspect, who was also granted legal aid, allegedly bought Jordaan’s service pistol from one of the murder suspects, but was not involved in the murder according to one of the first two accused.

Ramphora says the accused has been charged with possession of an unlicensed firearm.

The murder accused were arrested in Etwatwa on January 28.

They were in possession of two unlicensed firearms as well as Jordaan’s Nissan Navada.

“One of the two accused of murder told the police where to find the third accused, who we arrested in Daveyton on January 29 for possession of an unlicensed firearm,” says Ramphora.

All three men remain in custody at the Modderbee Prison until their next court appearance.
