Adele clinches second place

Adele Lawrence (56) clinched second place in the Summer Fast One mountain bike race held on Sunday.

The 65km race which was held in Alberton was a proud race for Adele who only started mountain biking two years ago.

“The day before the race we cycled 50km so I felt like I didn’t have a lot of energy on Sunday,” says Adele.

“Training for the race started in December, we did a lot of ‘hill’ cycling to prepare me for the Summer Fast One.”

As the race progressed Adele seemed to get more energy and finished second in her division.

“I felt a sense of achievement after completing the race, it was difficult, particularly for someone my age who hasn’t been cycling for long,” says Adele.

The next big race for Adele will be the 300km Sani2C race in May that starts in Underberg and finishes in Scotttburgh.

“It’s a three-day stage race and I consider the Summer Fast One part of my training for the race in May,” says Adele.

The Springs resident started mountain biking as “It was a nice way to spend quality time with my husband who cycles,” she says.

Adele belongs to Springs Wheelers cycling club and received her first award in December from the club.

“I was awarded the most improved mountain biker in the women’s division at last year’s prize giving,” says Adele.

“In order to prepare for any race I just cycle regularly.”

The club meets every Saturday and cycles for an average of 60km.
