Great achievements for class of 2015

Students from Springs high schools gathered for a final time on Wednesday to receive their National Senior Certificates (NSC) and to celebrate their achievements.

According to the results of the National Senior Certificate (NSC) exams, Springs Muslim School is the top school in Springs.

Students expressed elation, relief and gratitude at receiving their final results.

Springs Muslim School had a 100% pass rate for the 12th consecutive year.

The school had 24 candidates writing the exams who attained a combined 45 distinctions.

Principal Suliman Ismail expressed his gratitude towards his board of educators for their dedication and commitment.

Five students excelled, receiving four or more distinctions with Zainab Mohammed receiving six distinctions.

Springs Girls High obtained a 99.28% pass rate, dropping from the previous year’s 100% pass rate.

The 129 girls who passed jointly earned 126 distinctions.

Their top student, Fatima Amojee, secured eight of these.

“The girls did excellently. I am very proud, they outdid themselves,” says Angela Jones.

Springs Boys High obtained a 95% pass rate with Donavan da Silva being their top achiever.

The school had 116 candidates, earning 56 distinctions for the school.

Mrs Gabi Willis, an educator at Springs Boys High says, “We are very proud of all the students who wrote the exams.”

Kobus van Zyl, principal at Eureka High School says, “With multiple teacher rotations last year the pass rate dropped, but the school will work harder this year to get the best results ever.”

The school recorded a pass rate of 63.38%, down from last year’s 83% pass, with 90 of the school’s 142 matrics passing. The students shared a combined total of 10 distinctions.

Jameson High School reported a slight improvement from the 83% pass rate in 2014 with this year’s matric class recording a pass rate of 84.84%, surpassing the national and provincial averages of 2015.

The school received a total of seven distinctions from the 33 students who wrote the exams.

Springs Secondary School had a 98.59% pass rate with two students failing.

Kishan Bodalina, the school principal, says he is pleased with the results as it is a four percent increase on the 2014 results of 94%.

With a total of 142 students writing the NSC exams, 41 students received a degree and 73 a diploma pass, with 26 students receiving higher certificate passes.

“We will continue striving for a 100% pass rate,” he says.

Springs Technical High School’s (THS) pass rate has increased to 93%.

Marina Rathe, principal of the school, says they are grateful for the 34% increase.

There were 91 candidates who achieved eight distinctions and 13 who achieved a degree and 48 a diploma pass.

Ninety-one students who wrote the matric exams achieved a total of nine distinctions with 13 achieving a degree, 48 a diploma and 17 students a certificate pass.

“We have worked extremely hard and I am grateful for the sacrifices made by the personnel who worked after hours and during school holidays,” says Rathe.

According to her the Secondary Schools Improvement Project, which was implemented by the Gauteng Department of Education, has helped the students to improve their NSC marks.

n The national results released on Tuesday showed a drop in the national pass rate from 75.8% to 70.7%.

Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga says Western Cape and Gauteng continue to record a pass rate well above the national average of 70%.

The Western Cape is the best performing province with 84.7% and Gauteng hot on its heels with an 84.2% pass rate.

The total number of candidates who registered for the 2015 NSC examinations was 799 306, written by 667 925 full-time candidates and 131 381 part-time candidates.

This is the highest number of candidates ever to write matric exams in South Africa.
