Tips: Beware of heat stroke during heatwave

With the heatwave currently being experienced across several parts of the country, ER24 is urging people to be cautious.

ER24 has attended to incidents over the past few weeks involving people who were affected by the heat.

People are urged to remember that heat exhaustion can lead to serious complications.

Severe heat exhaustion could lead to heat stroke which may in turn result in unconsciousness, seizures or cardiac arrest.

ER24 is urging people to monitor those who are experiencing a severe headache, weakness or disorientation, muscle cramps, nausea, vomiting or severe thirst.

Symptoms may also include the absence of sweating due to dehydration and confusion.

If these symptoms persist, medical assistance should be sought as soon as possible.

Tips:

  • Water is number one on the list, remember to stay hydrated.
  • Try to stay out of direct sunlight, if you are outside, seek shade or shelter and remember to use sunscreen for extra protection.
  • Wear loose clothing, a wide brimmed hat if outside as well as sunglasses.
  • If you are in an office or at home, ensure that the area around you is well ventilated.
  • Do not let children play outside in direct sunlight, ensure that they are hydrated.
  • Keep an eye on babies and the elderly.
