Selection Park sewage battle

A Selection Park resident seeks urgent assistance from Ekuruleni Metro as the battle with an overflowing, open sewage pipe continues.

Mike Nyondo (39), a resident in Selection Park and employee at a guest house situated in Sutter Road, Selection Park says, “Numerous attempts to get assistance from Ekurhuleni Metro regarding the overflowing sewage pipe have been disappointing and to no avail”.

According to Mike, over the past month, many of the residents in Sutter Road have been to the municipality to lodge complaints about the blocked sewage pipe.

Metro employees were seen pumping water from the pipe on Friday, “but by Monday the pipe was filling up again,” Mike says.

“The cover for the pipe was stolen months ago leaving an open hole which is deep and dangerous and the smell is overwhelming,” he adds.

Mike and the rest of the Sutter Road residents are again awaiting assistance from metro.

The owner of the guest house, Eduard Seijdlitz (63) says he contacted Ekurhuleni about the ongoing problem and was advised that Selection Park Ward Councillor, Shadow Shabangu, would be made aware of the situation and assist as soon as possible.

“When the hole is open people just drop refuse into the sewage pipe which leads to the blockages and a terrible smell,” says Mike

Some of the residents in Sutter Road are going to make a cement cover for the hole in an attempt to reduce the overflow of sewage water, blockages and the smell.

The Addie is still awaiting comment from the metro regarding the open sewage pipe.
