Senior citizens celebrated

Senior citizens from Bakerton were treated to a scrumptious meal, folk songs and dancing at the 25th annual Day with the Elderly, on Sunday.

The Bakerton Community Centre was packed with residents, who celebrated the role of of the elderly in the community.

The day, organised by the Bhairavi Sungum of Springs, acknowledges and celebrates the role of the elderly in the community and is dedicated to giving them a fun and entertaining day.

Krish Pillay (70), former chairman of the organisation, was the driving force behind this event, which he started 25 years ago.

“I was 45 years old at the time, but now that I am a senior citizen myself, I experience first-hand how much everyone still enjoys the get-together,” he says.

Krish stepped down three years ago and his son Kesavan Pillay is the current chairman.

In addition to the lunch, the organisation also gave away prizes.

Mootlel Moonsamy (83), who has been part of these celebrations since the very beginning, says the event gets better year after year.

She particularly enjoys the music.

For the past 12 years Farook Moosa (68), who has attended the event for the past 12 years, says she feels very important when she receives her invitation.

Pali Vassan (65) says the food and the music is the highlight of the day.

“I have been part of this event for the past 10 years and still enjoy it very much,” she says.

Although Shaba Khan (65), has only been part of these celebrations for the past four years, he says he is already looking forward to next year’s celebrations.

“The Springs Tamil School’s pupils dancing to old folk songs brings back good memories,” he says.
