Why vehicles need to be tested

For the month of October, a plan of action by the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality will see all public transport vehicles undergo free testing.

Themba Gadebe, spokesman for the metro, says they are doing free public transport vehicle assessments at all its vehicle testing centres.

“Our qualified examiners will conduct the critical 10 point check,” he says.

The free testing is being done to enhance road safety and awareness by encouraging road users to be alert of vehicle defects and attend to them.

“All classes of public vehicles may be brought for testing,” says Gadebe.

Testing takes around 20 minutes to 30 minutes per vehicle.

“The purpose of the free assessments is to determine whether a vehicle is roadworthy or not, and in case of the vehicle not meeting standards as required by the Road Traffic Act, the owner is advised accordingly to give attention to those defects,” says Gadebe.

He adds it is necessary for each and every motorist to make sure their vehicles are in good condition to ensure road safety.
