Operation Fiela nets 63 people

Springs police arrested 63 people during Operation Fiela raids on Friday.

The suspects were nabbed in the Springs CBD and the arrests include 60 illegal immigrants, two for drunk in public and one for theft from a motor vehicle.

According to Capt Johannes Ramphora, Springs police spokesman, the suspects are due to appear in the Springs Regional Court soon.

The operation was conducted by Springs police between 3.30pm and midnight.

Ramphora says Operation Fiela has been a magnificent success and will be continued on a weekly basis.

This operation has helped to clamp down on illegal activities.

Operation Fiela aims to maintain stability, peace, law, and security, particularly in high crime areas.

All the ATMs along Paul Kruger Highway, Nigel Road and surrounding areas, as well as shopping centres, were monitored for possible criminal activities.

Patrols were also conducted at local schools to monitor for break-ins.

Police, however, found everything to be in order.

The illegal immigrants will be taken to the Lindela Repatriation Centre in Krugersdorp for deportation.
