Celebrating Sarasvathee

The 23rd annual Sarasvathee celebrations took place in the hall of the Springs Secondary School on Sunday.

The celebrations, which included a multi-cultural heritage concert, were hosted by the Bhairavi Sungum of Springs.

The programme was packed with music and dancing.

The lighting of the universal lamp was a honourable moment where special guests were each asked to light five smaller candles on the lamp.

This ceremony was followed by an invocation dance by Sarvavidya Natyaalaya.

The Bhairavi Tamil School pupils performed Thamizh recitals followed by a dance item by Springs Sanathan Ved. Dharam Sabha and a song item by the group from the Springs Tamil Association.

Cultural items were performed by members of the Benoni Tamil School board, the Bakerton Bhajan Mandal, Springs Sanathan Ved. Dharam Sabha, Springs Sai Centre and the Springs Hindu Seva Samaj.

The final dance item of the evening was performed by children from the Bhairavi Tamil School.

Kesavan Pillay, chairman of the Bhairavi Sumgum of Springs, says it is wonderful that the community strives to honour and preserve a tradition dated back to the 1900s.

He says Saravathee is the Goddess of knowledge.

He explains she has four hands representing four aspects of human personality in learning: mind, intellect, alertness and ego.

“Without her there is only chaos and confusion,” he says.
