Father and son paddling team prepare for race

Father and son are well prepared for the Fish River Canoe marathon.

Enjoying the rapid of the recent Klip River Race, Johan Cronje (46) and his son Conrad Cronje (15) are practicing even harder for the upcoming Fish River Canoe Marathon in October.

The 80km race will take place in Cradock in the Eastern Cape.

Springs resident Johan says he is amazed by Conrad’s eagerness.

This weekend, the father and son duo will challenge another 22km Klip River Race from Ixoxo Manzi to Caravan Park in Meyerton.

On September 6, they will take on the 35km Liebenbergvlei River between Tweeling and Frankfort in the Free State.

They are both members of the East Rand Kayak club in Benoni.

Johan has been paddling with his son to prepare him for the distance and qualification for the A Grade river race in Cradock in October.

Exams, homework and winter sometimes get in the way of practice, as does farming requirements and commitments, but the pair are on track for a superb enjoyable 80km in the Eastern Cape.

They finished the Klip River race comfortably in 02:02 and thoroughly enjoyed the warmer weather and the adventures of the rapids.
