Report refuse collectors who solicit bribes

Residents must immediately report council workers who solicit bribes or related matters to the Ekurhuleni Metro.

This is according to Themba Gadebe, spokesperson for the metro, in response to an article in the August 20 edition of the Addie, ‘Resident bribed to have bags removed‘.

Gadebe says Waste Management Services is not aware of such an incident.

“The department has not received recent reports of such incidents, however, they are aware that during the December festive season requests are usually made,” he states.

“This is against council policy.”

Gadebe says waste collection workers, who are employees of the municipality, are paid to render a service to the community.

Currently all bags and bins put out for collection will be removed without any extra cost.

As from October 1, however, only the 240 litre bins will be removed.

Residents who are asked by workers to pay money must contact the Springs Waste Management Services immediately to allow for the necessary disciplinary action.

Gadebe adds that residents need to note the registration number of the refuse collection vehicle and if possible identify the person in question.

“Such an employee, if identified, will be dealt with according to the council’s Disciplinary Code of Conduct,” he says.

Waste Management Services can be contacted on 011 999 8497 to render a special service at a specified levy or take it to the nearest mini disposal site.
