No fixed date yet for only removing refuse inside bins

Hendrik Grobler from Strubenvale claims the new refuse bins are just another money making scheme of the Ekurhuleni Metro.

He says he has been living in Strubenvale for the past 42 years and pays his current account of R237.66 each month for refuse removal.

With the new black refuse bins being rolled out, he claims the metro never explained that his R237.66 will be replaced with a levy.

“In the end I will still have to pay the R237.66 plus the levy charged by them,” he says.

The new bins will have to be put out by 7am on the morning of collection.

“What a ridiculous statement,” says Grobler, “my refuse was never removed on time.”

He refers to a statement made in the article (‘Only refuse in bins will be removed’, Springs Advertiser, July 23), “This changeover is to eliminate some operational and service delivery inefficiencies”.

“How will they ever stop a strike or motivate workers to carry out their tasks in time?” he asks.

Grobler suggest the metro should give residents the opportunity to remove their own refuse and concentrate less on adding more money to residents’ accounts.

He asks if this new idea is not just a hidden agenda to get more money from the residents?

Ekurhuleni Metro spokesman Themba Gadebe says the use of the 240 litre bins is much more hygienic as dogs can’t tear the bags open when placed inside the bin on the pavement.

Previously, residents were levied according to their stand size, but now only the bins recorded on their accounts will be levied accordingly.

Tariff per 240 litre bin once per week:

  • Stand 0-300m² (value R300 000 or less at R105.38.
  • Stand 0-300m² (value >R300 000) at R124.11.
  • Stand +300m² (value >R300 000) at R129.99.

Gadebe says the metro will establish a date when they will start removing only waste placed inside the bins.
