UPDATE: Three suspects arrested

The SAPS provincial ATM Bombing Unit arrested three suspects for possession of explosives in First Avenue, Bakerton, on Friday.

Acting station commander, Col Siyakubumisa Notisi, says the police stopped and searched a VW Polo and found explosives in the vehicle.

“We are not sure what the suspects were planning to do with the explosives,” he says.

Shortly after 2pm, the Springs CPF deputy chairman, Ahmed Coughley, stopped at his business and he noticed a car pull up next to the Absa ATM. He then saw a SAPS vehicle driving past.

It was at that moment that he realised something was happening.

Within minutes, several suspects were arrested and explosives were found.

Although Coughley believes it was a brilliant tip-off which lead to the police arriving on scene before a bombing could take place, the police could not confirm that the suspects were planning on bombing the ATM.

Coughley compliments the police on a job well done.
