Cellphones, gifts stolen from hijaked courier van

A hijacked courier van was recovered in Du Toits Kloof Road, Eastvale, on Monday.

At 10am, EMPD officers received information about the hijacking, which had taken place earlier in Laingsburg Road.

When EMPD officers Danny Van Wyk, Louis Els en Louwtjie Du Toit followed up on the information, they found the stationary vehicle in Du Toits Kloof Road.

The driver and passenger of the van were found locked inside the back of the vehicle.

EMPD spokesman Clifford Shongwe says the driver was delivering a package in Laingsburg Road, when he was approached by two men.

One of the hijackers was armed and moved to the driver’s side of the van, while the other unarmed hijacker went to the passenger side.

The driver and passenger were told to get into the back of the vehicle and lie facing down.

The hijackers got into the vehicle and drove around Eastvale, eventually stopping along Du Toits Kloof Road.

The two victims claim they saw the suspects offloading packages from the van into a white vehicle.

The hijackers left, abandoning the van and its two occupants.

Springs police spokesman Capt Johannes Ramphora says the 28 packages contained cellphones and gifts.

The value of the stolen goods is unknown.
