New uniforms to distinguish remand inmates

Remand inmates at correctional centres in Gauteng have new uniforms.

The new uniform was officially launched last year in Umtata, in the Eastern Cape, and Gauteng is now rolling out the uniforms in all remand detention facilities in the region.

Remand inmates are those prisoners on trial or awaiting trial.

The official roll-out of the uniforms took place at the Boksburg Prison last Wednesday, and the event was broadcast live from the facility.

At the Modderbee Correctional Centre, 50 remand inmates, external stakeholders, families of the inmates and officials gathered in the hall to witness the launch from Boksburg.

The launch was also linked to various other correctional centres across Gauteng.

The uniform is aimed at strengthening security inside the centre, promoting cleanliness and distinguishing the remand inmates from sentenced inmates.

“The Department of Correctional Services has the responsibility to skill inmates inside the centres, hence the uniform is manufactured internally,” says Olivia Mothapo, spokesman for the Modderbee Correctional Centre.
