Murder suspect evades police

The Springs police are still looking for the murderer of Jan-Hendrik Potgieter (76).

Potgieter’s body was found buried in a shallow grave in an open field in Daggafontein on June 19, last year.

Three days prior to his death, one of his daughters, Lorraine Fourie, visited him at his home in Daggafontein.

During Lorraine’s visit, Jan-Hendrik mentioned to her that a man, who at one stage worked with him, was living with him.

According to her, it didn’t come as a surpise that her father was helping this man as he was known for caring about others.

Springs police spokesman Capt Johannes Ramphora says the man and his 17-year-old son were allegedly with Potgieter on June 18, last year, when Potgieter was killed with a spade after an argument allegedly took place.

Ramphora confirmed Potgieter died of multiple head injuries.

After allegedly killing Potgieter, the man and his teenage son are believed to have loaded the body into Potgieter’s bakkie and took it to Daggafontein where they buried him.

The man took his son to his estranged wife and left with Potgieter’s bakkie without saying where he was going.

The mother took her son to the Springs Police Station the morning after the incident, to report it.

It is believed the man has been seen in Springs several times over the past year.

Ramphora says they are doing everything in their power to find the suspect, but need the help of the community to find him.
