A Festival of Golf

Pollak Park Golf Club held their annual Festival of Golf from May 19 to 23.

This was the fifth Festival of Golf and was introduced to the clubs’ golfing calendar as a celebration of golf, entertainment, friendship and camaraderie, and was open to all golfers in the East Rand area.

The festival started early last Tuesday at Pollak Park Golf Club, with the club hosting senior golfers in the morning, and women in the afternoon.

The seniors’ results are as follows:

In first place was Brian Makings with 42 points, Syd Reid in second place with 38 points, and Ian Stewart coming in at third place with 37 points.

These ‘experienced’ golfers enjoyed their game before finishing up to the bar to give way for the women.

The women’s results are:

Glynis Banek and Carol Love shared first place with 47 points, Gill Murray and Sue Andrew received 46 points in second place, and Pat Bevel and Susan Schulte with 44 points in third place.

The open evening was a Cheese and Wine Tasting that was appreciated by all, who stayed late into the evening.

Wednesday was the traditional Pro Shop Competition that was well supported with regular Wednesday golfers as well as some ‘out-of-towners’.

These golfers enjoyed the pleasant warm weather with a festive atmosphere afterwards.

“The live music drowned out the sound of the generator and not even Eskom could stop these guys from having an ‘albatross’ of a time,” says Darren Plumb, operations director at Pollak Park Golf Club.

The club had an open day on Thursday and encouraged members to bring along visitors to appreciate the facility and golfing experience on offer.

On Friday, the club hosted a sponsored golf day by a local company in Springs.

The day saw over 180 golfers take to the course.

On the fifth and final day of the golf festival, the club had a Members’ Competition, which many golfers attended, enjoying the festive day.

On this day, the competition saw the following winners:

Gary Kimble and Mark Blackstock in first place with 46 points.

Coming in a close second were Zain Schalkwyk and Johan Tromp with 45 points, and in third place were Andre Becker and Barbra Becker with 44 points

“Management would like to thank all the players that participated in the Festival of Golf, the sponsors and suppliers for their support, as well as the club staff for a truly amazing week,” says Plumb.
