Vandals and thieves target concrete electricity poles

The concrete electricity poles situated along Vlakfontein Road, in Fulcrum, have fallen victim to vandals and thieves.

It was recently brought to the Addie’s attention that some of the poles have been broken and the light fittings stolen.

The concrete poles were erected by the Ekurhuleni Metro in an effort to curb theft.

Metro spokesman Themba Gadebe says they identified the four main roads joining Nigel and Springs as the areas where the concrete pole replacement work will be carried out.

This project was for the 2012/2013 financial year, but the completed areas were vandalised within three months of completion.

Plans are currently under way to involve communities in the fight against vandalism and theft.

Gadebe claims the matter was reported to community and political leaders to intervene before the street lights would be reinstated.

Ward councillor Dean Stone, however, feels he has been ‘kept in the dark’, and was not aware the project had been stopped.

Although Gadebe claims measures have been put in place to get security patrolling the targeted areas, Stone says this should have been done before the project started.

“It is poor planning from the metro’s side,” he adds.
