The crèche, which is situated in the Everest informal settlement, received plastic tables and chairs, cot mattresses and paraffin heaters.

Regina Jama, the principal of the crèche, was overwhelmed by the donation.

“These items are much needed,” she says.

The tables and chairs will enable the Grade R learners to complete their school work in comfort.

“All the children sit on the floor while eating, but now some will be able to sit at a table,” she adds.

The cot mattresses will allow the toddlers to nap peacefully during the day.

Regina says without the assistance of the Rotarians they would not be able to cope.

She is also grateful to the residents of Rus ‘n Bietjie Old Age Home, who cook breakfast and lunch for them daily.

“They bring the cooked meals to the school, serve the food and take the dirty dishes away with them,” she adds.

Ludwig Zuhlsdorff and Selina Mtsweni from the old age home were present during the handover of the donated items.

Selina makes sure the crèche runs smoothly.

Rotarian Vernon Jones says the paraffin heaters will ensure the classrooms are warm during winter.

“Although the donation is small, we try to address the needs of the crèche,” he says

The little ones gathered around the donated items with smiling faces.
