Five wins for local boxers

Young boxers from several boxing clubs competed in a development boxing tournament hosted by the Bert Collins Boxing Club on Saturday.

The seven judges rotated the three judging corners after every second fight.

The first five fighters in the red corner were from the hosting club.

When Clayton Meyer took to the ring he was confident the fight would turn in his favour.

After three rounds of three minutes each, Clayton was declared the winner by unanimous decision.

Both Adrian Colyn and Chrisjan du Press won their fights on points.

In the fight between Tim Lubbe and his opponent from the Boksburg Boxing Club, Adrian was declared the winner by a technical knockout.

Referee Piet van Vuuren stopped the fight seconds into the second round.

Tim proved to be the better fighter. With six points being deducted from Joseph Lubbe’s scorecard, he lost his fight on decision by the judges.

Trainer Jeanette Dyzel says the boxers are supposed to keep their heads up and Joseph kept dropping his head.

He was therefore penalised and six points were deducted from him.

Koos Nienaber lost his fight with a 2-1 decision.

Wouter Janse van Vuuren, an active boxer, won his fight against S Koopman from St Anthony’s boxing Club.

“We are proud to have four wins on points and one technical knock out,” says Jeanette.

She is impressed with the support they received during the tournament.
