Drain water flows into Presidentsdam

For three years, overflowing drains have been a troublesome issue for residents living in the vicinity of Presidentsdam.

Resident Donovan Smith believes the drain system is not sufficient for the amount of houses in the area, and that the continuous flow of dirty water into the dam will affect the birds and the fish.

While the Ekurhuleni Metro has reportedly attended to the problem before, Smith says it is ongoing.

Smith says about six months ago, the metro put tablets in the water at the gully where the inflow is, to help clear the filth flowing into the dam.

It helped eliminate the smell for a while, but the stench soon flared up again.

There are people fishing at the dam and sometimes children are seen swimming in the dam.

“Surely this is not good for our environment?” Smith asks.

According to Smith, the pump station is not strong enough to service the whole of Presidentsdam.

It was out of order for a while, but when the Addie visited the dam, it was operational.

Residents are trying to keep the area neat and tidy, but feel the metro should investigate whether there are any blockages higher up in the pipeline.

The Addie has sent questions to the metro, but no comment was received at the time of going to print.
