Couple robbed by police impersonator

A couple was assaulted in their bedroom.

A Selection Park couple were robbed and assaulted in their home last Monday by a man impersonating a police officer.

The husband and wife returned home from work, and found the front gate unlocked and the kitchen door open.

About 10 minutes later, the couple heard knocking at the door.

A man at the door identified himself as Ali and told the couple he was a police officer.

Springs police spokesman Captain Johannes Ramphora says the couple became suspicious and refused to open the door.

The police impersonator kicked open the door, and entered the room with another man, who was wearing a reflective jacket.

One of them pointed a gun at the couple and demanded money.

Ramphora says the suspects tied up the couple and searched the house.

They continued to ask for money and assaulted the couple.

The robbers fled the house with cellphones, a tablet and an undisclosed amount of cash.

Police urge anyone with information to contact them on 011 365 5700/19/20.
