Sod turning at Springs Retirement Village

The residents at the Springs Retirement Village (SRV) were all part of the sod turning on an extension to the facility last Wednesday.

SRV was taken over by the Methodist Homes for the Aged (MHA) last year when they saw the opportunity to add the home to the MHA portfolio.

The MHA Chief Executive Officer Kelvin Glen was proud to share the official ground breaking ceremony with the residents.

The board members were happy to announce that the MHA has set aside R20 000-million for the upliftment of the retirement village.

He apologised to the residents in advance about the noise and the discomfort they might experience when construction starts.

“I do believe it is for the best and that everybody will enjoy the facility more when it is finished,” he says.

The admin block, mid frail and frail care will get a face lift.

Kelvin says there is a huge need for rental units, therefore they decided to build more cottages at the back of the SRV.

The building of the new units have already started.

He explains Doctor Ian Thornton is there to assist them with his medical expertise in the upgrading of the frail care.

The full-time site manager, Theresa Fry, says they look forward to the changes and can’t wait for the renovations to start.

MHA board member Less Smith says the renovations and new unit will increase the value of the privately funded units.

He agrees with Kelvin in saying it will be a bit inconvenient with the building but it is a small prize to pay for a long term benefit.

“I hope the end result will be satisfactory,” he says.

The expected date of completion of the full project is January 2016.
