Accused’s court case postponed

Bail of R500 was granted to the suspect.

The 34-year-old man who was arrested last Monday, appeared briefly in the Springs Magistrate’s Court yesterday (February 16).

He was arrested for possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition at Grootvlei shaft four.

The case has been postponed to February 25 when he will appear in the Springs Regional Court One.

The Springs police reacted to a phone call they received from a security guard who reported the “armed man”.

SAPS members found two unlicensed pistols and 32 rounds of ammunition in his possession.

Police detectives traced the serial number on one of the pistols, and it had been reported stolen in 2009 by a man in Johannesburg South.

Spokesman for the Springs Police, Captain Johannes Ramphora, said they will send the firearms for ballistic testing to establish if they were used in any crimes.

The police also found a cellphone in the suspect’s pocket which is believed to have been stolen.

Ramphora said they are investigating the possibilities of the man being linked to a rape, and several house and business robberies.

The suspect remains in custody at Modderbee Prison.
