Memorial to be fixed

The upgrades are expected to be completed by the end of May 2015.

The restoration on the war memorial at the top of Third Street, in the central business district will start soon.

Ekurhuleni Metro also said this at the end of October last year, promising that this monument in Springs ill be restored.

Themba Gadebe, spokesman of Ekurhuleni metro says the upgrades are expected to be completed by the end of May 2015.

The metro’s aim is utilising the war memorial as a focal point of future remembrance events, usually commemorated in November.

Gadebe says the metro’s heritage division is currently in the process of collating all the names that were reflected on the plaques that were stolen and vandalised.

The vandalised plaque will be reinstalled, using black Rustenburg granite.

Gadebe says the use of the granite is a preventative measure to avoid the repeat of stealing the names off in future because the names of all the war hero’s will be sandblasted onto the plaques, using the same font and style as the original plaques.

He says the original, vandalised copper roof on the dome will be removed and the retrieved copper will be stored.

This domed structure, made from cement, will be plastered and painted with a copper-coloured SABS approved roof paint that will look like the original roof structure.
