Top achievers receive awards

Several people were recognised for the performance in 2014.

The Gauteng East Education district held a curriculum award ceremony at the Springs Civic Centre last Wednesday.

It was held in honour of the learners, matriculants of 2014, principals and teachers who contributed to the district’s 81.2% pass rate.

District director Maureen Mthimunye says the recognition is due to the sacrifice and commitment the learners, staff and parents had made to ensure our learners achieve the best.

Stable Inn owners Gunte and Adri Kommer host a few learners just before their final matric exams every year.

“These learners stay over and extra curriculum classes are given to them by professional educations to prepare them better for their exams,” says Gunte.

On the day they also handed over a tablet to the province and district top learner from Dr Harry Gwala Secondary School in Etwatwa Reginald Champala.

He has achieved seven distinctions and received a laptop, trophy and certificate as the top learner handed to him by the district director.

Representatives from several Springs schools including Strubenvale Primary School, Jameson High School, Hoërskool Dr Johan Jurgens, Hoërskool Hugenote, Springs Muslim School, Olympia Park School, Dr WK du Plessis School, Protea School and Springs Girls’ High School received certificates.

The top learners district competition winner Dylan Braganca from Strubenvale Primary School received the spelling bee award.

Teacher Shireen Govender from the same school received a top educators spelling bee award.

In the secondary schools category 11 Springs schools were honoured: Springs Girls’ High School, Jameson High School, Dr Johan Jurgens High

School, Hoërskool Hugenote, Protea School, Springs Muslim School, Dr WK du Plessis School and Olympia Park School.

Top educators from Springs Girls’ High School, Johan Jurgens High School, Hoër Tegniese Skool Springs and Hoërskool Hugenote received awards for Afrikaans, accounting, English, maths literacy, life science, maths, physical science economics, hospitality studies.

Top learners from Hoërskool Hugenote, Springs Girls’ High School and Dr Johan Jurgens High School received certificates per subject.

In the top 10 learners category the following learners received a minimum of six distinctions and a high average mark:
Grace-Lai Raath and Annika Bouwman from Springs Girls’ High School, Hugo de Villiers and Estelle Engelbrecht from Hoërskool Hugenote.

They all received a trophy, tablet and a certificate handed over to them by Maureen.

Springs Girls’ High School also received an award for the school with the most bachelors degrees in Springs.

Maureen says building on the legacy of Reginald’s achievements, the department wish the 2015 matriculates to better his performance.
