A ‘Toyi-toyi’ dance experience

The stage is set for Ekurhuleni's 'Toyi-Toyi' dance theatre.

‘Toyi-toyi’ is a protest rhythmic dance which was popularly used by black South Africans as a medium to convey their opposition to the Apartheid regime.

A workshop of the dance will be held on January 30 at the Springs Theatre from noon until 2pm to equip dancers with advanced theatre skills and a performance will follow at 6.30pm until 8pm.

The dance has now found new expression as a form of art.

An organisation based in Ekurhuleni collaborated with a company from France to form a Toyi-toyi theatre production which will seek to recite personal experiences of the artists during the apartheid era.

The production has received support from the City of Ekurhuleni as part of the metro’s commitment to promoting art in the region.

“We are certain that the ‘Toyi-Toyi’ dance theatre experience will undoubtedly take theatre-goers on a nostalgic journey by showcasing a blend of theatrical ingenuity together with real life narratives,” said Themba Gadebe, spokesman for Ekurhuleni.
