Hijackers shoot bystander in Selection Park

A hijacking in Selection Park ended in a member of the public being shot last Thursday.

The owner of a Jetta parked in Van Aardt Street was struggling with an armed hijacker when a passing vehicle fired a shot that hit a bystander in his shoulder.

Springs police spokesman Captain Johannes Ramphora says the man was at this address at 6.25pm to pick up friends.

He returned to the vehicle with an infant and, while waiting for his friends, an armed man pointed a gun at him ordering him to get out of the vehicle.

The victim begged the hijacker not to take the infant.

Ramphora says the victim walked around the car and found the baby on the ground but decided to prevent his car from being hijacked.

He tried to pull the hijacker from his vehicle and it was during this struggle that one of his friends shouted at him to be careful.

It is believed the occupants in the passing vehicle were the hijacker’s accomplices.

One of them fired a shot in the direction of the two men struggling on the ground, but the bullet hit a bystander.

Ramphora says the police were informed of the incident and when they arrived on the scene they found the wounded man, the hijacker and the victim.

Both the victim and hijacker suffered head injuries.

It is not sure whether the victim was taken to hospital for treatment.

The hijacker was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.

According to Ramphora the charges weren’t read to him as he is still in hospital.

An attempted murder case was opened at the Springs Police Station.

He asks the public to assist the police with the investigation of this case.
