Firecrackers cause chaos

Since December 24 fire crackers are disturbing the peace every evening in Selcourt Enclosure.

Resident of Selcourt Enclosure Sarie van Niekerk (60) says they are tired of the firecrackers that are set off every night since December 24.

“My dogs are traumatised, having to live through the noise every night until the early hours of the morning,” she says.

Van Niekerk says the crackers start going off at around 5pm.

“The dogs in the neighbourhood are barking constantly due to the noise and it is scaring them.”

She adds that they picked up the burnt end of a firecracker in their yard.

“This isn’t really anything new as it happens every year, this year just seems a bit worse than the previous years,” says van Niekerk.

Captain Johannes Ramphora, spokesman for the Springs police, says residents must phone the police when the crackers are being fired and the perpetrators will be fined.

Spokesman for the EMPD Wilfred Kgasago says it is a difficult offence to persecute as they rely mostly on complainants to act responsibly and phone the EMPD.

“It is an offence to set off any fireworks in a residential area as it is disturbance of peace, causes trauma for domestic animals and is a danger to unsupervised children,” says Kgasago.

A warning will be given to the guilty party and if the problem persists, they will be given a spot fine of between R1 000 and R2 500.
