Chiropractors help people heal

The world of the chiropractor involves non-intrusive treatment of a patient.

Being a chiropractor is a very rewarding profession because you help people heal of their illnesses.

Moira Segeel, local chiropractor working from the N17 Hospital, says the world of the chiropractor involves non-intrusive treatment of a patient.

She says the chiropractic method of treating patents is regarded as alternative medicine.

This is also sometimes regarded as a last resort of treatment of a patient for orthopedic surgeons, neurologists and podiatrists.

Chiropractic means “done by hand” and is a natural drug-free and surgery-free approach to health.

The chiropractor doesn’t use any chemicals or injections to treat sick people, but uses their hands to do either adjustment of the spine or manipulation of the joints or soft tissue therapy.

Although most chiropractors focus on the spine and how it is functioning, the bio-mechanics of the upper and lower limbs is also important in their scope of work.

This is a type of treatment that will show results over time, depending the ailment of the patient.

Segeel says matric exemption with mathematics and science is compulsory for studying for a chiropractor.

To become a chiropractor a student has to study six years years at either the University of Johannesburg (UJ) where Segeel studied or at the Durban University of Technology (DUT).

She says the first two years of studies are identical to what the doctors are studying.

After that for the next four years they carefully study the spine and joints on a human body as well as every trigger point because this is the basis of the work of a chiropractor.

Segeel, who is small in stature, says anyone can do this job because the manipulation or adjustment of the spine do not require physical strength, but technique.
