Customise your emergency kit

It is important to check the expiry dates of medicine.

Place items and medicines that the whole family will need in an emergency in your travel emergency kit.

Elaine Steyn, a pharmacist assistant says there is a basic travel kit available, which will cost between R140 and R160.

This kit’s content will be:

  •  1 small burn shield.
  •  Different types of bandages and gauze.
  •  2 non-alcohol wipes.
  •  12 safety pins.
  •  10 fabric plasters.
  •  1 pair of latex gloves.
  •  1 CPR mouthpiece.
  •  1 pair of plastic tweezers.
  •  1 pair of first aid scissors.

Steyn advised that the medication each member of the family will need as well as an antiseptic cream and paracetamol for pain, should be added to this kit.

She warns that the expiry dates of the items should be checked regularly and those that have expired, replaced.

Another warning is to replace the items as soon as they are used.
