Many disposal sites all over the country were recently audited by Afriforum.
Springs’ site met the necessary requirement and scored 96%.
The audit was done to establish if it complies with the minimum requirements of the national department of environmental affairs for waste sites.
Gert Parsons from Afriforum inspected the site and found the site to meet all the necessary requirements.
He checked if it is fenced properly, if it has an entrance, if the soil is compacted regularly to prevent garbage being blown around and found no fires were set at the site.
An important requirement is that it should not be occupied by homeless people.
He also found no water pollution or any other form of pollution at the site.
The only problem he found was a section of the fence vandalised, but it was repaired shortly after the audit.
Gert says it is essential that dump sites are properly maintained and managed, otherwise it can cause serious dangers to people and animals in the immediate vicinity.
During the audit Afriforum discovered many of the municipalities does not meet the necessary requirements, but Springs’ site is intact.
Ward councillor Shadow Shabangu says the site is being extended to enlarge the dumping area.
Lillian Mkakwa from the metro’s environmental resource management department informed Shabangu on the audit and the outcome thereof.
“I am impressed with the results and happy with the report,” he says.
Sizwe Raglothule, superviser at the site, says he saw the report and is happy that they scored 96%.
“We keep the site clean and we are proud of the work we do,” he says.
