Noise – consider your neighbours

Following complaints about noise pollution in Springs until late at night can cause serious repercussions to the culprits.

Noise complaints are being dealt with in terms of the noise control regulations for Gauteng according to the government Notice 5479 of August 20, 1999.
Themba Gadebe, spokesman, for the metro, says the regulations state ‘playing loud music is identified a noise nuisance’.

People complaining plays valuable role in the provision of the detail related to the complaint.

He says officials dealing with such complaints are not on duty at night, therefore, it is recommended that the community report the incident to the Springs police for immediate reaction.

Captain Johannes Ramphora, spokesman for the Springs police, says noise pollution is difficult to control in certain areas in Spring after 10pm.

Councillor Ramesh Sheodin says people are inconsiderate of their neighbours.

Gadebe recommends the complainant should keep record of the dates and times of incidents as well as the reference number or case number provided by the police.

During office hours noise complaints can be reported to 011 999 8771.

Gadebe says the matter will be investigated and if required, a statutory notice will be served on the perpetrator.

“Upon failure to comply with the requirements of the notice, further investigations will be conducted which may lead to legalaction being instituted by the air quality and noise control directorate from the Department of Environmental Resource Management.”
