Principal not suspended during investigation

Frans Styger resumes his duties as principal while investigation is still on-going.

Questions were raised after the Addie reported that Hoërskool Hugenote principal, Frans Styger, was too work from the Department of Education’s offices until the investigation was completed.

Styger faces allegations of illegal trading in gold on school grounds after an episode aired on Carte Blanche on September 14, where he was recorded saying someone could drop the gold off at the school grounds if he gets a cut out of the deal.

Spokesman for the Gauteng Department of Education, Phumla Sekonyane, told the Addie, in September, that Styger would be removed from the specific environment and into their offices.

On contacting Sekonyane again, she confirmed that it was indeed the case at that time.

“The department sent a letter to the principal on that day asking him to provide reasons as to why the department should not put him under precautionary suspension,” says Sekonyane.

After considering the principal’s reasons and the nature of allegations he is facing, the department took the decision not to put him under precautionary suspension on the basis that his presence at the school will not pose any threat or interference in the on-going investigation.
